Julián Castro unplugged: On Ann Richards, Texas in transition and extremists in the GOP

Before he gave a convention keynote heard around the world, Julián Castro was thinking about Texas leaders who came before him.  “I think about how groundbreaking Texans have been who have delivered these keynote speeches — Barbara Jordan probably being most meaningful for the progress of the nation, being so powerful that people still remember it,” he told The Dallas Morning News hours before taking the stage Tuesday night. Jordan electrified the Democratic National Convention in 1976, a black congresswoman from Texas with a stentorian voice and strong record on civil rights. Castro said he also thought about Ann Richards, whose 1988 keynote is remembered for his searing line: “Poor George, he can’t help it …”
